We have been developing web sites for over ten years. In fact we started out as a web site development company. Our goal was to build the most attractive and functional websites that we possibly could for our clients.

In those days, there were tons of businesses that didn’t even have a website, so the goal of designing and building something from scratch was simple, but it wasn’t always easy to get the right balance between a nice site and a lead generation machine.

Today however it’s rare to encounter a business that does not already have a website. So the majority of our services are geared toward second, third and nth generation websites that enable businesses to expand and to grow.

Where Many Go Wrong

Not that long ago I had a conversation with the owner of a business that wanted a new website. This was going to be their first! The conversation went something like this:

Me: How can I help you?

Jo: I want a website

Me: What do you want it to do for your business?

Jo: I want people to find out more about my company from my website

Me: Great, how do you anticipate that people will first find your website?

Jo: From being on the Internet, they will find me on the Internet

Me: Okay, so what will they do to find you? Will they search on Google?

Jo: I was thinking that they would just enter my business name.

Me: Umm, but how will they know your business name and what you do if they don’t already know about you? First they must discover your business through some form of marketing or advertising. Do you plan to invest in some form of marketing or advertising?

Jo: No! I just want to web site, that’s all. I’ll see how I get on with that, marketing is too expensive and I can’t afford it right now. I just want a website!

This type of conversation was typical a few years ago, but I find it strange that many people still fail to make that connection between their website and the activity they must create to make that website effective.

Having a website on its own will not help you to generate leads. The whole game of lead generation is much more complex. I can’t recall the last time we built a website without marketing to kick start lead generating.
