Blogging for SEO

We have considered the overall benefit of SEO, we have also talked about inbound generating links, article marketing and adding fresh content to your site.

A Blog is an important part of the SEO mix.  The benefit that a Blog provides are as follows:

  1. Add new fresh content to your site on a regular basis
  2. Increase the page number of your site in a controlled manner by adding a new page for each blog entry
  3. Enable your content (Blog entries) to get syndicated and distributed throughout the internet that anyone interested can find you and your content – inbound links
  4. Creates internal links that come in to your important pages
  5. Tell people about your business, what’s happening, what’s new and what you want them to now – stimulate social media and social bookmarking

So a blog is a must!  There are still unanswered questions:

    • What software should you use for your blog?
    • Where should you set it up, on your site, off your site, as a sub domain?
    • What plug-ins do you need?
    • What about design, should you pay particular attention to design
    • How should it be configured for best use?

There are lots of other questions that you need the answer to when you implement a Blog as part of your SEO strategy.  We can go through this in detail but the first thing that you need to know is that we always use Wordpress.  We design a Wordpress theme specifically for your website.  So whatever your web site looks like now the blog will look like a natural part of that site.

Sure there are times when you may develop a blog off your site and there are very good reasons for doing this and we review them too during the implementation stage of the project.

Link Building

Link building is a primary component of SEO.

In fact the majority of SEO activity is largely to generate links.  A link is like a vote and the more links that you have coming in to your web site is like having a lot of votes.  So the more votes you have the more likely you are to appear higher in the search engines as your competitors.

But unlike an election campaign all votes are certainly not equal.  A vote from a site that is already deemed as an authority site on the internet is a lot more beneficial that getting a link from a directory that has say ten thousand links on the same page where your link is.

So how do you get authority links coming in to your web site?  The answer, unfortunately, is not easily.  But an effective SEO strategy will involve a reasonable amount of reverse engineering of your competitors.  This analysis will indicate the following:

  • how many links you need to achieve your objective
  • the quality of those links – quality meaning how much value do they have
  • the age of those links – have they been there for years
  • The number of pages you may require
  • The social media activity you need to undertake
  • And  other key SEO parameters

Armed with this information you can define and execute an SEO strategy that will start to position you on the same level as your competition.  The only thing you need to consider is that they have been there for a long time and you will be the ‘new kid-on-the-block’. So they may already have more authority than you and you will need to increase your efforts to overcome them.

Article Submission

Article submission is all about telling the world lots of things about your business right?  Well no!

It may be that the world just isn’t interested in knowing about every little thing about your business or alternatively there just may not be that much to say.

So why would you need an Article marketing strategy and what does it really do for you?

Well a major part of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is about getting inbound links.  Links that original somewhere else apart from your web site and point directly to your web site.

Inbound links!

One very effective way to get a lot of links is through Article marketing.  But the goal is not to just write about your business but to write about what your audience may be interested in – not just about you but perhaps about the product of service that you may be offering and how they can benefit.  Here is a selection of questions that you can ask to determine the themes that you can base your article creation on:

  1. What is the best way to use your products/service
  2. Where can get your product/service
  3. What are the common mistakes people make when selecting your product/service
  4. What are the common mistakes people make when using your product/service
  5. How do people know how to select a good provider for your product/service
  6. What is the price range of your product/service out there in the market
  7. What’s new in your industry

Always use Article marketing and event PR to tell people about new things that happen in your business – new product/services that have been created, price changes.

We could continue and when we are creating an article marketing strategy we often do. We try to create as many logical themes about a business as we possibly can and you can easily see that hundreds of article titles can be produced from the above list alone.

The goal is to create as many titles and articles as you possible can and start working with your article marketing strategy.

Having the content is key – and if all you done was distributed your content you would have some success with article marketing and generating inbound links.  However, the real benefit is to get as much impact as you possibly can from each piece of original content that you produce.  That is often the difference between article marketing and an effective article marketing strategy that is going to work as part of your SEO success.

Social Media / Social Bookmarking

You may have a view on the social web and how it can work for your business.  The chances are that you are still unsure about how social media sites like Twitter or Facebook are actually going to work for you – especially if your target audience are not likely to be reading your Tweets or following you on Facebook.

Well the truth is that the social web is here to stay.  And although it may not be immediately obvious what that means for your business, it is clear that it represents the chatter that is going on in the business world. So how do you benefit from it?

The search engines live and die by their ability to find out about what is being said and what is current.  Their goal is to provide the most up to date information related to your search.  If you are interested in or want to join in with the chatter then the search engines must help you to achieve that objective.

For example, if you had a website which was all about house prices and the economy and let us suppose that you hadn’t changed any page on your site or added any information for over a year.  Now it just so happens that we enter into this massive house price crash and all of a sudden people are concerned about repossessions and rising interest rates then there would be no surprise if all of a sudden your site started to ranked lower in the search engines compared to new entries found on Twitter and in the media.  The reason for this is due to the more topical natures of what is current.  The search engines need to provide people with information related what is happening now – first, then they server information.  And social media sites represent what is happening now.

But how does that help you when you know your audience are not likely to be on Twitter?

The answer to this and many related social media and social book marking questions form the basis of how we make social media a central element in an effective SEO strategy for all businesses.

Pay Per Click

Most people have a some idea about Pay Per Click but the detail eludes them. In fact most people have a number of concerns and misconceptions about Pay Per Click and here are just a few that we have heard:

  1. Surely my competitors will just spend all day clicking on my ads and I’ll run out of money
  2. Well It’s a bidding system isn’t it, the highest bidders appears at the top
  3. You pay for every time your ad listing is shown on Google
  4. Most people don’t click on those listings because they don’t know what they are
  5. Google will spend all my money and I’ll lose out
  6. There is no way to really measure how successful it is
  7. Everyone has to go to my home page
  8. It’s really easy to set up so I think I’ll give it a go
  9. People who aren’t really interested in your products can just click on your listing and you’ll lose money

10.  It’s a mugs game – I’d rather spend my money on Search Engine Optimisation

11.  Having a PPC campaign helps with your Google rankings

The above list of misconceptions is either completely wrong or partly wrong but almost everyone you know will believe at least one of the above is true.

So what’s the truth about PPC?

Well the truth is that PPC is the single most targeted form of marketing available on the planet today.  Another really bold statement to make, and no – we’re not paid by Google in any way!

The reason we can confidently make this statement is because we believe it to be true.  The only people who will ever see your ad listing are those people who you want to see it because you have chosen to appear for very specific targeted searched that people make and at predefined times of the day and on specific days of the week, having typed the words in a specific order and appeared on an exact position on the page and they must have been on a specific location on the earth when they entered that search. That is how precise you can be with Google Pay Per Click advertising.

For example, if I was selling a very rare type of moon sand, not the kind that you get on the light side of the moon but the rare stuff that even the astronauts find hard to get hold of.  The fine grain moon sand that you have to dig 6 feet deep to get hold of and if you’re not careful will dissolve by the time you get back to earth.  Well guess what?  You can buy the exact phrase ‘hard to get moon sand’ and sell oodles of your hard to get stuff direct to the people who are looking for it.

Now you can be sure that anyone who searches for that has got to be a pretty hot prospect right?  Especially if you’re one of only ten other companies who sell it.  Yes, there are others.  Search yourself and you’ll find them!

Is that targeted traffic?  You bet it is!  And what’s more you’ve moved infinitely closer to your next customer.  Now you’re planning your trip back to the moon to

get more of that stuff – but you have tested the market and you know there is demand and you know exactly how to connect with that demand.

For some keywords you may find that there is either no direct demand for what you sell or the people that come to your web site don’t actually make a purchase.  So what does that information tell you? Well,

  • Maybe the keywords are not right for your business
  • Perhaps your web site does not do a good enough job of making the sale
  • The people who search for your product may not want to buy, they may be at the research or information stage
  • Maybe You visitors don’t know a good product when they see one
  • It is possible that the internet doesn’t work for your product
  • So it could be time to bail out and stop wasting any more money

All these are valid assumptions that you can infer from a failed PPC campaign.  But the important thing is that you are moving closer to the truth.  And the truth will save you money.

An effective, professionally managed, PPC campaign is probably the most wisely spent financial investment that you will ever make in your online exploration – and it should be the starting point to a long and prosperous journey.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is that combination of things that are required to enable you to naturally rise up the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).

We all know that most people don’t go onto page two of the search engines when searching for a product or service – so everyone would like to be on the first page.  The truth is everyone can’t be on the first page.  It takes a combination of hard work and investment to enable you to achieve first page rankings for your most effective search terms.

However, before embarking on any form of search engine optimisation strategy our recommendation is that you analyse and investigate exactly what key phrases convert business and spend your hard earned money on optimising your website for those core phrases.

Well let’s just assume that you know exactly what key words will convert into leads or sales, how do you then turn that to your advantage when you start implementing an SEO strategy.  The answer is always in your research.  Good effective research will uncover exactly what phrases will work for your business and where you should spend your money.

Defining the SEO strategy

The SEO strategy will consist of all of some of the following:

Tuning your website based on your researched keywords

  1. Article Marketing
  2. Blog submissions
  3. Forum commenting
  4. Social media or social bookmarking
  5. Video Marketing
  6. Podcasts
  7. Development of Web 2.0 properties
  8. Other places where you can be heard online

An effective SEO strategy is a carefully crafted combination of which of the above techniques you will need to use, when you need to use them and why.

So any SEO strategy should involve a detailed understanding of the key phrases that work for your business, the marketplace that you are operating in and the competition that you will need to overcome. Once you have this information you need to implement a system that will enable you to machine like consistently generate the correct combination of content at the right time and in the most cost effective manner.
